Student Insurance

Student Insurance

Student insurance is an incredibly valuable business that has been helping students safe-guard their property while they are typically under a tight budget. Many students will be leaving home for the first time and trying out life on their own. With classes and work, and of course socializing, this doesn’t leave much money, and usually expensive things that are needed for the aforementioned activities.

What student wouldn’t be complete without an iPod, laptop, and mobile phone? Without these items, especially the laptop, student life becomes difficult and in the case of theft or property damage, it could be detrimental to the livelihood of both the social and educational aspects of student life.

Student insurance covers items that a student needs, may require or simply owns and is of great value, and what is usually a discounted rate.

Student insurance can be taken out in many different ways. For example, if your parents wish to cover you as a student with your items as home contents insurance (many policies cover items of value, out of the home for a small price) this means that your items will be covered, and at a noted student rate. Some universities will offer insurance if you are living on their grounds as it’s common for people to steal frequently from student dormitories due to the amount of people coming to and fro.

For this reason, these universities may provide safe security systems and locks on the doors, as well as safes and lockers which require a code. However, not all universities provide this option which is why student insurance should be looked into.

Student travel and medical insurance is also available, usually with confirmation of student status. This means that while traveling abroad, there should be a discounted amount of insurance for those students who are still struggling to make ends meet. However, if you’re going on an expensive holiday that you or your parents are paying for, don’t expect a severely discounted fee for these insurance prices, as it will be hard to prove that you are failing financially.

Every student should check the details of the policies thoroughly, as you may be able to insure items as a lump sum, or if they go over the limit, as maximum limit items. Larger or expensive items like televisions, or even cars will have to have separate premiums, but smaller items held in the one place (like a student dorm) may fit neatly under a single premium package. An average of 20 – 50 pounds per year should be what is expected of student insurance, and is a very decent price to pay, instead of the thousands that will pile up if your items are stolen.

Student insurance is a smart idea, especially for those who are struggling to make ends meet while studying at university. It provides peace of mind, and is usually relatively cheap, so there’s no reason not to invest in this insurance policy.
