Buildings insurance is a necessary insurance that should be taken to protect you and your family, and avoid being homeless and left out in the cold. Most mortgage companies and banks will require you to take out insurance when you take out your mortgage, in order to insure safety and a lessened financial risk for both parties.
Buildings insurance usually covers any damage that may occur, intentionally on the behalf of another person (arson), or any accident that may occur through storms or fire damage. This also covers damage to permanent fixtures within your home, but not removable items. For removable items, home contents insurance should be applied in order to avoid any financial risk within damage to your house, or theft.
House insurance does not cover general wear and tear of your building, however. If the damage has been covered by anyone lawfully within your house or family, you will not be qualified to receive any cover as contractually stated within every policy.
Things like smoke damage, if you are a smoker to your building will not be covered, as it is considered willfully damaged.
Make sure to carefully read the fine print within home insurance, as there are many rules and regulations that should be followed in order to get the most out of your insurance, and not break any of the rules.
Never forget to inform the insurance company of any small damage that does not require reimbursement, or any changes in the structure. Forgetting to inform your company could be unfavorable on your behalf when an accident occurs, as you may be held responsible and not able to claim insurance.
How much?
The sum of insurance should be calculated at the cost of rebuilding your house in any of the instances. Make sure you get a qualified builder to assess the cost of your house if rebuilding is needed before taking out an insurance policy, as being under or over insured could easily be a waste of good money.
Each insurance company has a slightly different premium and offer that you are able to undertake, if you so choose. Make sure to choose an insurance policy for your house that suits your lifestyle, family, home and area in which you live. For instance, some buildings insurance agencies will also offer a discount on medical or contents insurance, which may provide necessary if you have a family or simply a waste of money if you are living alone.
